Producers Guild Awards 2016: See Full List of Winners

Dede Gardner and Jeremy

Didn’t see that one coming! The Producers Guild presented The Big Short with its top prize, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Picture, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 23. The film — directed by Adam McKay and starringChristian BaleSteve CarellRyan Gosling and Brad Pitt — wasn’t the fan favorite and received less Oscar nominations than The Revenant, which many predicted would take home the award.

Almost every year, the Producers Guild Awards is the best predictor of which film will win the Best Picture Award at the Oscars. In the past 10 years, the top winner has gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture eight times, according to Entertainment Weekly.
When it was announced that The Big Short won the highest honor, two of the film’s producers, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, looked stunned themselves as they took the stage to accept the award. Pitt, who was also a producer of the film, wasn't present.
Throughout the night, the best of the best in film and TV were acknowledged for their work. Game of ThronesFargo and Transparent took home the top awards in the TV categories. Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse biopic, Amy, won for top documentary, while Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out won for top animated movie. Lady Gaga entertained the audience with a performance of her song “Til It Happens to You,” which is nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.
